Month of Photography Asia in Singapore

French photographers engage with "Asia" in the Month of Photography

The annual Singapore-based photography festival presents its 7th edition, themed “Engaging Asia”, from 17 June to 19 July 2009. This year, four French exhibitions will be on show : Marc Riboud, among the few European photographers to photograph Maoist China in 1957, Francoise Huguier, World Press Photo Prize winner in 1993 ; photographs from the FNAC Collection and the Black and White photos of Bertrand Meunier.

The exhibitions presented during the Festival will be based on the theme and will reflect how photographers have engaged with the concept of Asia not merely as a geographical entity but also in terms of the continent’s identity, culture, politics and social issues. Asia, in its sheer diversity, is a heterogeneous intersection of identities, cultures, politics, communities and societies.

There will be a total of seven exhibitions and one video projection and several public and fringe programmes spread over five venues : Asian Civilisations Museum ; Institute of Contemporary Art, Lasalle College of the Arts ; SMU Gallery ; SG Private Banking Gallery, Alliance Francaise de Singapour and The Cathay Gallery.

FNAC Collection

Changing Asia is an exhibition featuring 26 photographs by eight French and Chinese photographers from the collection of the Fonds national d’art contemporain (FNAC), a department of the Centre national d’art contemporain (CNAP).

Among the participating photographers are Bertrand Meunier, Jiang Jian, Xing Danwen, Johann Rousselot, Samuel Bollendorf, Johann Rousselot, Thierry Girard and Muchen & Shao Yinong. Coming from diverse backgrounds, these photographers have documented the changing social and geographical landscape of China and India and provided their own insights into questions of identity, society and community, as well as the role of traditions and cultural practices in our contemporary environment.

The exhibition also aims to demonstrate the power of contemporary photography in highlighting these issues. The exhibitions is co-presented together with SG Private Banking Gallery, Alliance Francaise de Singapour, with the support of French Embassy and supported by the Cultures France.
