The French Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, in collaboration with UNESCO, will host an International Conference on School Bullying virtually on 5 November 2020 (from 8pm to 10pm – Singapore time). This virtual event marks the celebration of the first International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School Including Cyberbullying. The theme of this year’s international day is “Together against bullying in school" . The conference, which is based on commitments made at the July 2019 meeting of Education ministers of the G7, under the French Presidency, seeks to create a global movement to end bullying in schools by raising awareness among all stakeholders, and mobilising governments, experts and the entire education community. The conference consists of a series of live sessions, including interactive round tables with education ministers, experts and representatives from the education community, as well as messages from high-level speakers including Singapore’s Minister of Education, Lawrence Wong, celebrities and personal testimonials.

Bullying in schools deprives millions of children and young people of the fundamental right to education. A recent UNESCO report reveals that more than 30% of the world’s students have been victims of bullying, with devastating consequences on academic achievement, school drop out, and physical and mental health. The confinement imposed as part of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in an unprecedented increase in screen time by children and adolescents, and likely exacerbated the issue.
